What are Local Colors?

Local colors, in the context of art, refer to the inherent, unaltered color of an object or scene, perceived under standard lighting conditions and without atmospheric distortion. It represents the ‘true’ or base color before the influence of light, shadow, reflections, or other chromatic effects.

In painting, local color is the actual, inherent color of an object as seen in normal, flat daylight. It is the color you "know" an object to be—for example, the local color of a banana is yellow, and the local color of grass is green.

"Local colors" refer to the distinct customs, dialect, dress, and features of a specific place that give it unique character.
